The official part of the Trans Karavanke leads through Northern Slovenia and the Southern Karawanks. The Trans Karavanke+ Route of the W-GRAVEL collection starts and ends in Rosegg and circles the mountain range – it can also be travelled in the opposite direction.
A shorter version of the tour starts at the train station of Grafenstein and ends at the train station of Fürnitz (find them in the W-Gravel Open Routes Collection on komoot), so travel ecofriendly and take the train to start your adventure.
The route includes rough parts and hike-a-bike sections, be aware and prepared. And there are bears in the Karawanks!
On the Slovenian side the route mostly runs along forest roads on the sunny slopes of the Karawank Mountains, and only climbs to a ridge and the border with Austria at its westernmost point, Peč, or Tromeja. The 132 official Trans Karavanke kilometres, are divided into 4 or 5 stages, include visits to the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana and several popular mountain outposts (Valvasor’s Lodge under Stol, Mountain Hut Pristava in Javorniški Rovt, Alpine Lodge at Zelenica, Alpine Lodge at Kofce).
Thanks to the project Alpe Adria Karavanke/Karawanken, which is implemented in the frame of the Cooperation Programme Interreg V-A Slovenija-Austria and co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development.
